Among the many activities on offer in the Hautes Fagnes, hiking takes centre stage. The nature reserve is criss-crossed by signposted trails and forest paths that allow you to explore the rich variety of peat bogs, forests and lakes, such as those at Robertville and Bütgenbach. Whether you prefer a peaceful family walk or a more challenging hike, the Fagnes mountain range offers routes to suit all levels.

One of the most fascinating things to do in the Hautes Fagnes is to explore the region’s unique biodiversity. The nature reserve is home to animal species such as red deer, wild boar and rare butterflies, as well as wetlands populated by characteristic plants such as carnivorous sundews. Educational trails and nature centres also offer the chance to learn more about the local ecosystems, making them ideal for families and nature enthusiasts.

There’s more to the Hautes Fagnes than just walking: the region also offers a variety of seasonal activities. In winter, snow lovers can go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the Ovifat or Mont Rigi areas. In summer, the areas around the lakes offer the chance to go canoeing, kayaking or simply relax by the water’s edge. Excursions to the historic Stavelot Abbey, cycle rides along the RAVeL, or a gourmet break in villages such as Monschau add to any visit to the region.
